When Spells Go Wrong; Magick Mishaps and Meltdowns! (Part 1)

This is Part 1 in our Troubleshooting Magick series. See Part 2 here.

As practitioners of magick, we embark on a journey filled with wonder and self-discovery. While our intentions are usually pure and our hearts are open, it is not uncommon for spells to take unexpected turns.

Fear not witches, for we are all students of the craft, and learning from our experiences is a natural part of this magickal AF path. In this blog, let’s explore those moments when spells don't quite go as planned and discover the gentle art of navigating through these situations with grace and understanding.

So, when a spell doesn't unfold as intended, it can leave us feeling disheartened or uncertain. It is not a reflection of your worth or abilities as a witch. Instead, view it as an awkward opportunity to grow, learn, and embrace the ebb and flow of the universe's energies.

Why do spells go wrong and not work?

In this space of compassionate understanding, we will delve into the various reasons why spells might go awry and just don’t work as we intended:

  • Timing Misalignment: Sometimes, the universe has its own rhythm, and our spell's timing may not align perfectly with our desires. Embrace patience and trust that the right moment will come. There are even some witches who believe the planetary hours and alignments in astrology make an impact too.
  • Lack of Focus: We're only human, and distractions can momentarily interrupt our focus during spellwork. Cultivate mindfulness and grounding techniques to stay centred during your craft.
  • Unintended Consequences: The magic we work is intricate, and unintended consequences can arise often. Approach these situations with understanding, learning from our experiences and taking responsibility for our actions.

  • External Interference: External energies or influences might disrupt the flow of our spell. Regularly cleanse and protect your space to create a harmonious environment for your magick. I once had an argument with someone when I was doing a 30-day spell, and it severely messed up the vibes I think, as I couldn’t let it go, and all the work was for nothing. I’ve learned to sit in stillness for longer post-conflict now before spellwork.
  • Internal Blocks: Our subconscious beliefs or doubts may create internal resistance. Engage in self-reflection and shadow work to identify and release these blocks, allowing your magick to flow freely.
  • Incompatible Methods: Different spells and traditions have their unique nuances. Ensure the methods you use are compatible with your intentions to avoid conflicting energies. Lorraine Anderson breaks this down as using three or less items for magickal properties so that messages of intent don’t get mixed or conflict with each other.
  • Divine Intervention: Sometimes, higher powers have other plans for us. Embrace the possibility that your spell may have been redirected for your highest good. This is a common occurrence for those who bought into the Moldavite trend back in 2020.
  • Energy Exhaustion: Spellwork requires energy, and fatigue can affect the outcome. Prioritize self-care and recharge before diving into intricate magic. Your magick can flow freely from your full cup after!
  • Misaligned Intentions: Our conscious and subconscious intentions might not always align. Take time to clarify your desires and focus on intentions that resonate deeply within you.
  • Learning and Growth: Sometimes, spells don't go as planned to teach us valuable lessons. Embrace these experiences as opportunities for growth and wisdom on your magickal path. I think this is more common for those who work with deities, versus those whose work is secular.

We are continuously learning and evolving as witches. Embrace the twists and turns of spellcraft with an open heart and a positive outlook.

Instead of feeling defeated, see these moments as chances to refine your craft, deepen your connection with the magickal forces around you, and ultimately, enhance your skills as a compassionate and powerful witch.

Let us continue to support one another, share our experiences, and grow together in our shared love for the craft - and keep an eye out for part two, where we talk about what you can magickally do when things don’t work out.

Happy spellcasting! 🌟🌙
